Growing in the Habits of a Disciple

Growing in the Habits of a Disciple

In the midst of these uncertain and challenging times, our mission as a church has not changed: Following the Holy Spirit, we exist to create a movement of disciple-making disciples, in RDU and around the world. In light of this call, we’re taking the next five weeks to help our church family grow in five essential habits of being a disciple of Jesus.

Each week, we’ll focus on one habit of a disciple of Jesus, discussing it in our small groups, challenging each other to grow in it, and using resources to dig deeper.

  • Small Group Discussion - The curriculum for our small groups during this five-week series will center around one habit each week. Take this opportunity to grow personally and corporately with your community. If you are not in a small group, please reach out to your campus team to get connected.
  • Habit of a Disciple - Each week’s study will lead us to one outcome, one habit, to develop as disciples of Jesus.
  • Dig Deeper - For those that want to go deeper in this habit, we’ll provide some resources that can help you do so. As you use these resources, ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to respond in ways he is wanting to grow you.

Parents, be intentional about sharing your testimony with your kids this week. As you do, share the gospel with them and ask them if they've trusted in Jesus for their salvation. If they have, help them develop their testimony. If they haven't be sensitive to the Spirit and see if he's doing a work right now to bring about their salvation. This could be the moment you've been believing would happen for years!

Parents, develop a plan to help your kids serve your family this week. Learning to be a servant to our families is a key building block to being a good servant to our world.

  1. Have your kids write or draw a way to serve each family member on slips of paper. Examples include: "Make my brother's bed," "Give my dad a hug," or "Do the dishes."
  2. Place the slips in a jar/box/etc.
  3. Each morning, have your kids choose a slip of paper and use it as a reminder to serve someone that day.

Parents, go through the WITH prayer model alongside your kids three times this week—at dinner, at bed time, or a random time during the day.

  • Wow - Tell God how amazing he is. Give him praise.
  • I’m Sorry - Tell God what he already knows: that you have sinned (disobeyed). Ask for his forgiveness.
  • Thank You - Thank God for the awesome things he has done in the world, in the Bible, and in your life. Be specific and make it personal.
  • Help - Ask God to help you, people you know, and people all over the world. He can do anything! Ask him, trust him, and believe him to do big things.

About the Habits of a Disciple

As we love and care for each other, our city, and our world, we know God has called us to grow as disciple-making disciples and deepen our dependence on him. As we say often around here, “The gospel is not just the diving board; it’s the pool.” We believe God is at work in this season in many ways, but we know one of them is for us to go deeper into that pool. We don’t want to waste this moment; we want to trust that God will redeem it.

The following verses serve as guides for us:

" … walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God." - Colossians 1:10 (CSB)

"Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—making the most of the time..." - Ephesians 5:15–16 (CSB)

God wants each of us to increase in our knowledge of him, even in this season. In light of this call, we want to take five weeks and focus our church family in growing deeper in essential habits of being a disciple of Jesus. For five weeks, we will focus on five essential habits for disciples of Jesus. We will discuss them in our small groups, challenge each other to grow in them, and provide resources for those that are led to dig even deeper.

We look forward to growing with you!
