Stewardship is not just about what you do with your money. It is about managing well everything that God has given us.
Including our own bodies.
Paul reminds us of this fact in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. He says, “You know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God, don’t you? You do not belong to yourselves, because you were bought for a price. Therefore, glorify God with your bodies.”
He seems to be pretty clear about being a good steward of what God has given us. I understand that some people have health issues that restrict their overall well-being. But if you’re like me, you could probably benefit from a few changes to your eating habits. And some of those benefits include saving money.
That’s right. Healthy living is an often-overlooked way to save money. Here are six ways:
- Decreases Medical Expenses. When you are unhealthy, medical expenses will usually increase. From medications, to hospital visits, and possibly even lifelong diseases, these health issues can take a toll on your bank account.
- Reduces Food Costs. Contrary to popular belief, eating healthy can be better for your budget. Fast food may be cheaper than a salad at a nice restaurant. But buying fresh food from the grocery store will end up being less expensive than those midnight fast food runs.
- Increases Your Productivity. There have been a number of documented studies done about the relationship between one’s healthiness and productivity. One study found that employees who eat healthy are 25% more likely to have higher job performance. So, instead of grabbing the coffee or energy drink, maybe you should reach for an apple.
- Reduces Entertainment Costs. Who doesn’t like going out to the movies and getting a large popcorn and some candy? Or how about dinner and a movie out? These are good and fun things, but if you end up going out more than you stay in, you are probably spending more than you should on food.
- Decreases the Number of Sick Days You Take. In the same study about productivity, the researchers found that people who were healthier also took fewer sick days from work. And if you are sick, you might end up going to the doctor, which turns into more medical expenses.
- Extends the Life of Your Wardrobe. As funny as it sounds, when you eat unhealthy foods, your weight fluctuates. Many times, this means that you gain or lose a lot of weight, and end up needing new clothes. Obviously, our bodies change over time, but make sure you purchase new clothes because they have worn out, and not your health.
As with anything, there is a balance that needs to be found. I love cheeseburgers. But they are a treat more than they are the norm. Work towards a healthier lifestyle, and you might be surprised by the money you save.
