God’s presence with his people has always been the point of the biblical story. The Old Testament pattern was to build a tabernacle—then later a temple—and God would fill it with his glory, his presence. The New Testament pattern began with Jesus, God with us, the very presence of God in the flesh. But it didn’t end there: It ends with the Holy Spirit, God IN us, making us living, walking temples of God.
